Europe’s Research and Innovation Strategy
A recent whitepaper document title “Europe’s Research and Innovation Strategy; Networks of the Future” has not only identified visible light communication as “strategically important” but also places it at the top of the list of eight “new technologies” where future research should be focussed.
The report was produced by the Expert Advisory Group and Steering Board Members of the Net!Works Technology Platform. It identifies a number of strategically important technologies for future research and provides recommendations on the way forward for maximising innovation, and thereby economic impacts, in Europe. It highlights how important communication technology is to the European economy and states that 7 out of the World’s 10 largest telecom operators are European (Telefonica, Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, Orange, BT, Telecom Italia, Telenor Group), as well as the world’s major telecom manufacturers (Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Nokia, and Nokia Siemens Networks). The problem we have highlighted in the past; i.e. wireless traffic capacity demand doubling every year but radio system capacity can only double in ten years, is reiterated in the whitepaper. It does not say much about VLC, or any other technology for that matter, but it is good to see influential groups identifying VLC as a wireless capacity solution and lobbying for more strategic research effort to be placed in this area.
